Curriculum & Materials Development

Dr Evans made a difference to the English Language Teaching Centre, changing our approach to course design and development. Her practice of going to the literature to explore different and better approaches to the teaching and learning of English as well as making our courses practice-based and context-relevant remain touchstones for course design and development at ELTC.

The courses that she developed were extremely well-received by our teachers and proved to be effective in impacting student learning outcomes in the classroom.

Dr Ranji Singh Gill, Deputy Dean of Social Sciences, Quest International University
Formerly: Director, ELTC Division, Ministry of Education, Malaysia
I've developed well over 30 TESOL related courses during my career for private companies, the higher education sector, governments and language institutes.
With a PhD in adult learning, TESOL, language analysis and task design, as well as a background in designing corporate training, I have two major foci:

  1. What these specific learners need to be able to DO to achieve their goals and
  2. What does the current literature tell me about HOW they can learn to do this best.

Her aim was always to develop and implement new and innovative styles of instruction aligned with authentic and constructive material. When challenges arise in our department, she is a team player in brainstorming a course of action.

Mai A. AlFaiz, Coordinator English Center, Institute of Public Administration, Saudi Arabia
I am not interested in what has gone before.  I am not interested in anything that is not best practice.  I don't do textbooks unless it is teacher-training on how best to use them because that is obligatory.

Learner engagement was very high throughout the lesson and the learners clearly valued the input. I witnessed a real learner autonomy as they took full responsibility for the pace and progression of their tasks.

Barbara Sotiriadis, Director, Hawthorn English, Melbourne University
What I am totally, utterly passionate about is designing materials, learning sequences and courses that engage learners, that create cognitive dissonance and maximize learning, and that enable students to negotiate the texts to which they need access - regardless of their current proficiency level.

You manage absolute-beginner production supervisors who need to talk to you about manufacturing faults?  Let's do it.

Your Ministry of Education has introduced a new curriculum, textbook or assessment system and your teachers don't know how to use it?  Let me do a practical, classroom-based interpretation of it that teachers will love to use.

You despair of your academic students ever being fully able to function in a university environment? In specific disciplines? I've got you.

Very detailed and very effective set of process-oriented materials with clear aims... Activities very student centred and very relevant...

Dr Colin Barron, Team Leader, Modern Languages, University of Glasgow
